Properties and uses of magnesium
Magnesium is a lightweight, gray-white metal, possessing only two-thirds the density of aluminum. Among all alkaline earth metals, it has the lowest melting point at 923 K (1,202°F) and the lowest boiling point at 1,363 K (1,994°F). Pure magnesium is brittle and prone to fracturing along shear bands, but it becomes much more ductile when alloyed with small amounts of other metals, such as 1% aluminum. The ductility of polycrystalline magnesium can also be greatly enhanced by reducing its grain size to approximately 1 micron or less. Magnesium, a silver-white metallic element, is the lightest of all structural metals and is available in two main forms: pure magneisum and magneisum alloy. Magnesium ingots are used in the production of magnesium alloys and find applications in the chemical industry, military, and instrument manufacturing.
As a metal, magnesium is primarily used as an alloying element with aluminum, with these aluminum-magnesium alloys being commonly used in the manufacture of beverage cans, sports equipment like golf clubs, fishing reels, and archery gear.
Application of magnesium chips
Magnesium shavings are used for fireworks, welding rods, steel desulfurization. Also used as a reducing agent, the manufacture of flash powder, light alloy raw materials, metallurgical desulfurization agent, deoxidizer, optical mirror, the manufacture of magnesium salts, the manufacture of Gram's reagent, spectral analysis. Used as raw material for automobile, airplane and rocket manufacturing.
Application of magnesium powder
Magnesium powder is mainly used as reducing agent, in making flash powder, lead alloy, metallurgy as desulfurizing agent (when used as raw material for desulfurizing agent in metallurgical industry, magnesium powder particles are wrapped with a layer of passivation agent externally to prevent oxidation of magnesium powder), in addition, it is used in organic synthesis, illuminant and so on.
Magnesium powder has the characteristics of flammable and explosive, high temperature and dazzling white light when burning, so magnesium powder is widely used in military industry and aerospace industry and other scientific and technological fields. In steelmaking industry and non-ferrous metal casting, magnesium powder is used as desulfurizing agent and purifying agent, and as reducing agent in rare metal production. In the chemical industry, magnesium powder can be used as spraying, coating, anticorrosion industry in the use of more and more, in the monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and metallurgical powder die-casting in the dosage is also very large.
